Understanding
Ultrasound Scans

The high-frequency sound waves are transmitted from an ultrasound transducer. These sound waves are then reflected by different tissue types in different ways. The reflected sound waves are then picked back up by the ultrasound transducer. The sound waves are then transformed into an image by special software. This allows medical professionals to examine your organs, tissues, and skeletal system without the need for surgery or radiation.

BOOK A SCAN

Ultrasound scans can be used to diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions throughout the body.

Ultrasound guided intervention

Whether you’re investigating a sports injury, or monitoring a known condition, Ultrasound can provide invaluable insights to guide your medical care, support healthy living and monitor your body before symptoms can arise. They can also guide clinicians in using needles to deliver the following interventions and procedures;

  1. To obtain samples of joint aspirate for diagnostic purposes
  2. For administer pain relief or steroids to localised inflammation of the joint or soft tissue
  3. To aid mobilisation
  4. To assist with rehabilitation and improve function

Abdomen and Pelvis

Examining organs such as the liver, kidneys and reproductive organs (prostate, uterus, ovary etc). One of the most requested scans for women is a pelvic gynaecological Ultrasound scan.

This allows us to detect or exclude abnormalities like ovarian cysts or masses, endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine masses, congenital uterine anomalies, polycystic ovaries, tubo-ovarian masses, signs of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine fibroids, cervical and endometrial polyps.

Heart and Blood Vessels

Assessing heart structure and function, detecting vessel disease. This can identify congenital heart disease or other heart muscle concerns (cardiomyopathy), valve disease or coronary artery disease. More frequently known as echocardiography when imaging the heart or a doppler or duplex when imaging blood vessels.

Joints and Musculoskeletal System

Ultrasound is particularly helpful in the diagnosis of orthopedic and sports injuries in ligament, tendon, muscle and cartilage

Momentm Ultrasound: Fast, Effective and Safe

Ultrasound is generally a very safe procedure, but there are important considerations.

Who Can Have an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound scans are a very safe procedure. They can help to:

  • Make a diagnosis
  • Make a decision about your treatment
  • Monitor a condition
  • Monitor the progress of a pregnancy

It involves a handheld probe being placed onto your skin and moved over the area. Sometimes the probe is used for an internal examination.

Lubricating gel is put onto your skin first, to help the probe move around smoothly. For internal scans the gel is placed onto the probe, which is fully sterilised in between uses.

Radiation and Contrast Agents

Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, making it safer than X-rays or CT scans. There are no known long-term effects from exposure to Ultrasound fields.
