MRI Body Health Scanning: Precision Metabolic and Organ Health Assessment

Advanced MRI-based scanning that goes far beyond a standard health check — measuring your body composition and liver health with clinical precision, in as little as ten minutes.

Why MRI Body Health Scanning

Why MRI body health scanning?

Most routine health checks tell you surprisingly little. Blood tests can appear entirely normal until a condition is well established. BMI reduces your health to two numbers that say nothing about where fat is stored or how much muscle you have. Even standard private health screens rarely produce a meaningful picture of what is actually happening inside your body.

MRI body health scanning is different. Using advanced imaging technology deployed in leading hospitals and research institutions worldwide, our scans produce precise, quantitative measurements of your body composition and liver health — without radiation, without injections, and without the limitations of conventional testing.

The result is a level of clinical insight that, until recently, was available only in academic medical centres.

Our Packages

All three packages use the same MRI session — simply lie still for ten minutes while the scanner does its work. Results are delivered within 48 hours.

Package What it covers Scan time Price
Core Body Composition Visceral and subcutaneous fat and muscle composition to support weight and metabolic health evaluation 10 minutes £195
Metabolic Package Body composition combined with liver fat and iron concentration — an integrated evaluation of metabolic and liver health 10 minutes £395
Liver Health Full quantitative liver health assessment measuring disease activity, liver fat, and liver iron 10 minutes £495

Body Composition One Pager page 0001

Core Body Composition — from £195

What it measures: This scan produces precise measurements of visceral adipose tissue (fat around the internal organs), subcutaneous adipose tissue (fat beneath the skin), and skeletal muscle mass. The ratio between these is a substantially stronger predictor of metabolic risk than total body weight alone — and not something a standard health check or BMI calculation can tell you.

Who is it for: Anyone wanting a reliable metabolic health baseline, those beginning or reviewing a weight management programme, or anyone monitoring a condition such as type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease where body composition is clinically relevant.

Your report: A clear visual breakdown of each tissue type, with every measurement compared against validated reference ranges for your age and sex. Accessible without a medical background, and detailed enough to be clinically meaningful to your GP or specialist.

LiverMultiScan One Pager UK EU 2025 page 0001

Liver Health — from £495

What it measures: This scan quantifies three key markers of liver health: liver cT1 (reflecting fibroinflammatory disease activity), liver fat fraction (the percentage of fat within the liver), and liver iron concentration. Liver conditions such as fatty liver disease and early fibrosis are common, cause no symptoms in their early stages, and are frequently missed by standard blood tests — making this scan a valuable tool for early detection.

Who is it for: Those with a family history of liver disease, anyone with borderline or abnormal liver function tests, those with type 2 diabetes, obesity, or metabolic syndrome, and anyone on long-term medications that may affect liver health. Also suitable for anyone seeking reassurance that their liver is healthy.

Your report: Each measurement is compared against established clinical reference ranges, with a clear indication of whether any finding warrants further investigation. LiverMultiScan is developed by Perspectum, an Oxford University spin-out, and has been validated against liver biopsy across more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

The Metabolic Package — £395

What it measures: A combined evaluation of body composition and liver health in a single ten-minute scan — measuring visceral and subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle mass, liver fat, and liver iron concentration together. The two systems most closely linked to long-term metabolic risk, assessed in one appointment.

Who is it for: Those wanting the most complete picture of their metabolic health in a single session, and anyone for whom both body composition and liver health are relevant — including those managing weight, metabolic syndrome, or the effects of long-term medication.

Your report: A single integrated report covering all body composition and liver health measurements, with each result set against validated reference ranges. Our most comprehensive metabolic assessment at a single price point.

Coming Soon: CoverScan Multi-Organ Assessment

CoverScan is the world’s first quantitative multi-organ MRI assessment, evaluating the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, and pancreas — along with full body composition — in a single scan of around 40 minutes. It measures 56 biomarkers across six organ systems and is UKCA-marked and FDA-cleared.

We are working towards making CoverScan available at Momentm. If this is something you would be interested in, register below, and we will be in touch as soon as it is available. Patient interest will directly inform when we bring this service online.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Book Your Appointment

Before you arrive

No significant preparation is required for body composition scanning. If you are having the Liver Health or Metabolic Package, please avoid eating for four hours before your scan (water is fine). Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips or fasteners, and avoid calcium supplements on the day.

Your Scan

During your scan

You will lie still on the MRI scanning table while the system captures the images it needs. The procedure is quiet, comfortable, and entirely non-invasive — no confined spaces, no injections, no breath-holding beyond a brief moment for some sequences. Most scans are complete within ten to fifteen minutes.

MRI Body Health Scanning — Your FAQs

I am taking GLP-1 medication (Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro). Is this scan relevant to me?

Yes. Clinical research indicates that without appropriate monitoring, a meaningful proportion of weight lost on GLP-1 medications can include muscle tissue alongside fat. MRI body composition scanning gives you and your clinical team a precise picture of what is actually changing — distinguishing fat loss from muscle loss, and tracking visceral fat reduction, which is a well-documented benefit of GLP-1 therapy.

When should I scan if I am on GLP-1 medication?

A baseline scan before starting treatment, followed by a follow-up at three to six months, gives you objective data to optimise your programme and ensure you are losing fat rather than muscle. Our Metabolic Package is particularly well-suited to GLP-1 monitoring, as it covers both body composition and liver health — the two systems most meaningfully affected by this class of medication.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book any of our body health packages directly through our online portal. If you have a referral or want your results shared with your GP or a specialist, we are happy to arrange that.

Is this safe?

Yes. MRI does not use ionising radiation, making it entirely safe for repeated use. No contrast agents or injections are required. Standard MRI safety precautions apply — please let us know at the time of booking if you have any metal implants or other MRI contraindications.

How is this different from a DXA scan?

Our MRI body composition scan and DXA scan measure different things and complement each other well. DXA is the gold standard for bone density and gives a reliable whole-body fat and muscle estimate. MRI body composition provides more detailed metabolic data — particularly the distinction between visceral and subcutaneous fat, and the VAT:SAT ratio — which has stronger clinical relevance for metabolic disease risk. We offer both at Momentm; our team can advise which is most appropriate for your circumstances.

What if something is found?

If your scan identifies a finding that warrants further investigation, your report will say so clearly and indicate the appropriate next step. Our team is available to discuss your results and, where needed, to refer you to an appropriate specialist — many of whom are part of the Momentm clinical network.

Can I have this scan if I am pregnant?

We do not perform these scans during pregnancy. Please let us know at the time of booking.

How often should I repeat the scan?

For most people, an annual scan or a scan every two years is appropriate for monitoring purposes. If you are actively managing a condition or tracking the effects of treatment, your clinician may recommend a shorter interval. We will include guidance on this in your results report.
