Understanding Your Heart — Without the Wait
Palpitations. Breathlessness. Chest tightness. Your heart is trying to tell you something. At Momentm Health Cambridge, our echocardiography service gives you fast, expert-led answers — no GP referral required, results within 48 hours.
What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram — or “echo” — is a non-invasive ultrasound scan of the heart. Using high-frequency sound waves, it creates detailed, real-time images of the heart’s structure and function: the chambers, valves, walls, and the blood flowing through them.
It is one of the most important diagnostic tools in cardiology, providing information that no blood test or ECG can offer — a direct, moving picture of how your heart is performing.
At Momentm, we perform transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) — the gold-standard, non-invasive echo — carried out by a trained Cardiac Physiologist and reported with full clinical detail. All studies are performed in accordance with British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) guidelines, ensuring your scan meets the highest standards of clinical practice.
Where clinically indicated, we also offer 4D echocardiography — advanced volumetric imaging that captures the heart’s movement in three dimensions over time. This provides significantly more detail than conventional 2D echo, particularly for the assessment of cardiac volumes, valve geometry, and complex structural conditions.
Who Should Consider an Echocardiogram?
You’ve been advised to investigate a heart concern
If your GP or a consultant has suggested echocardiography — whether to investigate symptoms like breathlessness, palpitations, or chest discomfort, or to look into a suspected condition — you can book directly with Momentm without waiting for a formal referral letter.
Your GP or consultant has referred you
Momentm accepts clinician referrals and provides prompt appointments for patients needing fast-track cardiac imaging — with results returned directly to the referring clinician.
You’re an athlete seeking cardiac screening
High-intensity training places significant demands on the heart. Pre-season cardiac screening and baseline echocardiography are increasingly standard across elite and amateur sport, and Momentm provides a discreet, professional environment for athletes at every level.
You have a known cardiac condition
Whether you’ve been previously diagnosed with a valve problem, cardiomyopathy, or congenital condition, regular echocardiography is essential for monitoring change. We offer a straightforward, accessible route to ongoing surveillance without a long wait.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I self-refer for an echocardiogram?
Yes. You can book directly with Momentm without a formal referral. Please note that Momentm is not an emergency or acute care service — if you are experiencing a new or sudden onset of chest pain, palpitations, or breathlessness, contact 111 or 999 immediately.
Is an echocardiogram safe?
Yes. Transthoracic echocardiography uses sound waves, not radiation. It is completely safe, painless, and non-invasive.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can self-refer directly through our online booking portal. If you have an existing referral, you’re welcome to upload it at the time of booking.
How long does the scan take?
Most echocardiograms take between 30 and 45 minutes.
When will I receive my results?
Your report will be ready within 48 hours of your appointment.
Can my results be sent to my consultant or GP?
Yes — we can transfer your report directly to any named clinician at no additional charge.
Is echocardiography suitable for children?
We currently offer echocardiography for adult patients only. Cardiac imaging for children should be arranged through a GP or paediatric cardiologist.
Will I need to undress for the scan?
You’ll be asked to remove clothing from the waist up and will be given a gown to wear. The scan requires direct skin contact with the chest to capture clear images. Privacy and comfort are maintained throughout.
Can I eat and drink before my scan?
Yes. No fasting or other preparation is required for a transthoracic echocardiogram. You can eat, drink, and take any regular medications as normal.
Can I drive after my scan?
Yes. An echocardiogram is non-invasive and uses no sedation or contrast agents, so you can drive home and carry on with your day as usual.
What is 4D echocardiography?
4D echocardiography captures the heart’s movement in three dimensions over time, building on conventional 2D imaging. It offers a more complete view of cardiac volumes, valve geometry, and complex structural conditions. Your Cardiac Physiologist will determine whether 4D imaging is appropriate for your scan based on the clinical question being asked.
What's the difference between an echocardiogram and an ECG?
An ECG (electrocardiogram) measures the electrical activity of your heart through small electrodes placed on the skin. An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to produce a moving image of the heart itself — its structure, valves, and pumping function. The two tests provide different information and are often used together.
