What is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor is a small, portable device that continuously records your heart’s electrical activity over an extended period — 48 hours, 7 days, or 14 days. Unlike a standard ECG, which captures only a brief snapshot in a clinic, Holter monitoring records your heart rhythm throughout your normal daily activities, giving clinicians a far more complete picture.

ECG monitoring can be used to investigate and assess a wide range of cardiac concerns.

Palpitations and Irregular Rhythms

Identifying abnormal heart rhythms during the moments you actually experience symptoms, rather than relying on a brief in-clinic recording.

Post-Stroke Assessment

Detecting "silent" atrial fibrillation — one of the most common but underdiagnosed causes of stroke. Up to 25% of unexplained strokes are linked to undetected AF. Extended monitoring can change treatment from aspirin to life-saving anticoagulation therapy.

Pre-Surgical Cardiac Clearance

Many planned operations require cardiac monitoring as part of the pre-assessment process. We offer same-week appointments for urgent cases, helping prevent delays to your surgery.

Heart Failure Monitoring

Identifying arrhythmias that may be contributing to breathlessness, fatigue, and fluid retention — particularly important in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Syncope and Dizziness

Capturing the intermittent rhythm disturbances that cause fainting or near-fainting episodes, which are frequently missed by shorter recordings.

Holter Monitor or Patch Monitor?

We offer two types of monitoring device, and we'll help you choose the right one.

G28 scaled

Holter Monitor

The proven, multi-lead recording device worn on the chest with electrode patches. Delivers comprehensive rhythm data across multiple leads, and is suitable for all monitoring durations. Choose this option if you anticipate swimming or are unable to keep the device dry.

Patch Monitor

A single-use, water-resistant adhesive patch that adheres directly to the skin. Discreet, lightweight, and more comfortable for longer monitoring periods. The preferred choice for 7- and 14-day monitoring where everyday comfort matters.

How Long Should I Monitor For?

The right monitoring duration depends on your symptoms, clinical situation, and what your doctor is hoping to identify. As a general guide:

48-Hour Monitoring – Ideal for initial heart rhythm assessment and pre-surgical cardiac clearance, particularly when symptoms are recent or surgery is scheduled within days. Captures the most common rhythm abnormalities sufficient for surgical planning.

7-Day Monitoring – The clinical gold standard for most cardiac investigations. Recommended for post-stroke AF detection, palpitation investigation, syncope evaluation, pre-surgical assessment before major procedures, and heart failure monitoring. Seven-day monitoring detects arrhythmias in 47% of patients — compared to just 13% with a 24-hour recording.

14-Day Monitoring – Maximum detection for complex or infrequent presentations. The most valuable option for post-stroke AF workup, rare arrhythmia detection, complex syncope cases, and long-term medication assessment. Clinical studies show a 66% detection rate at 14 days, compared to 9% at 24 hours.

Your ECG Monitoring FAQs

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No. You can book directly through our online portal without a referral. If your GP or specialist has recommended monitoring, we are happy to work alongside them and share results directly.

Which service option is right for me?

Home Delivery offers maximum convenience for patients comfortable fitting their own device. Hybrid combines a clinic fitting with the convenience of postal return. If you would prefer full in-person support at every stage, ask about our Clinic Service option.

What is the difference between a Holter monitor and a patch monitor?

Holter monitors use multiple electrode leads attached to the chest, providing comprehensive multi-lead recording. Patch monitors are single-use adhesive devices that are more discreet and comfortable for longer monitoring. Choose the Holter if you expect to swim or cannot keep the device dry.

Can I shower or exercise during monitoring?

Patch monitors are fully water-resistant and suitable for showering. Traditional Holter monitors should be kept dry — you can briefly disconnect the device to shower, following the provided instructions. Exercise and other physical activity are positively encouraged during monitoring, as capturing your heart rhythm during exertion is often clinically important.

I have had a stroke — why is heart monitoring being recommended?

Up to 25% of unexplained strokes are caused by undetected atrial fibrillation. Extended monitoring — particularly over 7 or 14 days — can identify “silent” AF episodes that occur intermittently and are easily missed by shorter recordings. Identifying AF changes treatment from aspirin to anticoagulation therapy, which can reduce your future stroke risk by up to 70%.

I need cardiac clearance before surgery — how quickly can you help?

We prioritise pre-surgical cases with same-week appointments available. With results returned within 48–72 hours of device return, we can help ensure your cardiac assessment does not delay your planned procedure. Contact us to discuss urgent scheduling.

How will I receive my results?

Results are delivered digitally via your personal health portal, typically within 48–72 hours of device return. Your report will include a clear explanation of findings and any clinical recommendations. We can also send results directly to your referring clinician or surgical team.

Who analyses my data?

Analysis is performed by ECG on Demand, our specialist cardiac monitoring partner. Our clinical team then reviews all findings before your report is issued.

What if I have symptoms during my monitoring period?

Note the time and nature of your symptoms in the diary provided. This is an important part of the process — it allows our analysts to cross-reference your heart rhythm data with your experience. Contact our 24/7 support line if you have any concerns during monitoring.

Is monitoring covered by private health insurance?

Many private health insurance policies cover ECG Holter monitoring. We recommend checking with your insurer regarding your specific policy and any pre-authorisation requirements.
